Material Matters Workshop: Reimagining Our Relationship with Materials Through Biomaterials Exploration
How can we rethink materials for a just and regenerative future? Material Matter[s] was a hands-on learning journey hosted by @civic_square alongside @material_cultures, exploring sustainable material transitions in our homes, streets, and neighbourhoods.
Building on #RetrofitReimagined 2023, Civic Square has continued to examine the connections between land, materials, and people. In 2024, they focused on practical applications through the construction and retrofit of the Neighbourhood Public Square in Ladywood, Birmingham—a living example of regenerative civic infrastructure.
Together with @material_cultures, they are researching low-carbon natural resources and productive site waste streams across our ecoregion. This research will inform their approach to sustainable material use in co-building the Neighbourhood Public Square.
From May to September 2024, they have invited peers from across the UK to learn, exchange, and test regenerative material practices. On Thursday, 5th September 2024, I had the privilege of joining them and hosting a workshop as part of their final showcase. This workshop explored the possibilities of biomaterials in response to neighbourhood and urban regeneration, engaging with 100% biobased binding agents to develop alternative plastics, ceramics, and composite materials.
